Father Sweets is a powerful young deejay coming straightoutta Brooklyn in the Nine Seven with a voice that demandsto be heard. His debut single on Easy Star Records is thevisionary "Sight Of An Eagle," a state-of-the-youth address, which tackles issues ranging from racism to poverty toAfrican history all in its brief four minutes. FatherSweets' positive vibe is prominently stamped on the songand, as he says in his lyrics, he is perched to "see thelion dominate and overcome over dem struggle" in '98. Father Sweets was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica,before relocating to New York City in 1983 at the age of 12.Sweets comes from a musical family, and participated inchurch singing groups as a youngster. When he entered theNew York City school system, he was exposed to a melting potof musical influences, from dancehall to hip hop to R&B andjazz, all of which have shaped him as a young artist. Father Sweets is a rare find in the music business: he isboth thoughtful and humble, as well as fiercely competitivein terms of self-improvement. Though he has yet to tour, hehas rocked the mic every time he has performed. FatherSweets' focus has always been more on the studio than on thestage. "I don't need to be in the spotlight," he says. "If I could just live in the studio, I'd love it." Down the road, along with his deejaying career, Father Sweets would also like to work behind the scenes as a producer. The name Father Sweets is a combination of two aspects ofhis deejay style: "The Sweets is for the ladies," he says, "and the Father is because I try to teach with mymusic--everyone has to learn." Sweets likes to writepolitical lyrics, focusing on the day-to-day realities hesaw growing up in Kingston and Brooklyn. He tells us,"Anytime I go outside in New York, I see the ramificationsof our society. I try to transform what I see into mylyrics." Musically, he cites Lt. Stitchie and Papa San asinfluences. Father Sweets is bound to be tearing up the dancehall chartsin years to come. His combination of insightful, inspiringlyrics and a streetwise voice are guaranteed to carry himfar.
