Already loved and respected by the dancehall community, Sluggy Ranks is poised to break through to the mass appeal he so strongly deserves. His strong roots & culture songs and his work with Easy Star Records (which marks his debut recording with a live band) are spreading the word near and far that Sluggy is an artist to be reckoned with. Possessing a strong and distinctive voice, Sluggy Ranks is bound to be remembered as an important artist that helped the transition away from slackness and toward roots & reality in the dancehall. Over the past year, Sluggy has been recording quality hit singles like "Soddom & Gommorah," "Thunder And Lightning" and "The Coming Of The Lord." These follow in the wake of his successful album for Profile Records, 1994's GHETTO YOUTH BUST. This well-crafted record featured Sluggy sing-jaying over King Jammy-produced dancehall beats. It also included new versions of his earlier hits "95% Black 5% White" and "Ghetto Youth Bust." He has worked in the past with Jah Life and Superpower, as well as other famous sound systems and producers. His new song on Easy Star's compilation CD is "Ethiopia," a propulsive and hypnotic song about Africa, the Motherland. The song's heavy beat and African percussion lay a musical foundation over which Sluggy delivers his haunting vocals. This track was released in Summer 1998. Sluggy
is a conscious artist well aware of the problems facing the youth of
today. His lyrics grow out of his experiences. He was born and raised
in Kingston, Jamaica, in the Ray Town area. He attended Clan Carthy
Primary School with singing legend Wayne Wonder. Sluggy arrived in the
U.S. in the late 80s and almost immediately began recording hit singles.
He hopes his songs help teach people of all races, religions and creeds
to love each other and to respect each other as they respect themselves.
He is vocal in his criticism of the Babylon system. In "Ghetto Youth
Bust," he implores the youth to "kill them with reality," instead of
with violence. All in all, he is an artist determined to deliver a positive
message. And most importantly, he is able to do this without alienating
his hardcore dancehall audience. Instead, he has slowly moved them towards
culture and reality and away from non-stop lyrics about guns and sex.
Sluggy is constantly touring. He can be contacted through his manager,
Phil Romain at 718-469-1051.
