BARRY BROWN DIES IN ACCIDENT
We are very sad to report the passing of reggae singer Barry Brown. The Jamaican Observer reports:

Reggae singer Barry Brown died Saturday on the premises of the Sone Waves
Recording Studio at Ivy Green Crecent in Kingston where it was reported that
he fell and hit his head.
For some time now, Brown had been battling a substance abuse problem in
addition to his asthmatic condition which led to a gradual deterioration of
his health.
The Studio One artiste whose death follows closely on the heels of his
legendary producer Clement "Sir Coxsone" Dodd with whom he recorded album
Roots and Culture, is credited for such 1970s hits as Far East, Step It Up
Youth Man, Natty Rootsman, Not So Lucky, We Just Can't Live Like This,
Politician, Cool Pon Your Corner, Jah Jah Fire, Mafia, Jah Jah Say among
others.
Old school deejay Winston "King Stitt" Parks describes Barry Brown as a "
very good singer" while veteran crooner Ken Boothe remembers him as a
consistent hit-maker in his heyday.
"In his time, he was going on well. He sang some songs that everybody
loved", Boothe told the Observer. --Jamaican Observer, June 1, 2004

Reggae Legend Clement "Sir Coxsone" Dodd passes onto Zion

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) -- Legendary music producer Clement ``Sir
Coxsone'' Dodd, a pioneer of reggae credited with launching the career
of Bob Marley and the Wailers, died Tuesday of an apparent heart attack,
friends said. He was 72.
Just four days ago, he attended a ceremony to rename a street after
his famous recording studio, Studio One, in Kingston.
Dodd started in the music business in the 1950s, operating a popular
``sound system,'' or portable disco, and releasing records on his own
label. An accomplished cricket player, he was nicknamed ``Coxsone'' after
a famous player from the 1940s.
In 1963, he opened the Jamaica Recording and Publishing Studio,
Jamaica's first black-owned music studio. Later that year, he was
introduced to a scruffy singer named Bob Marley, who auditioned for Dodd
with his band, the Wailers.
Impressed, Dodd signed the group to a five-year contract, launching
a musical career that would span three decades and take Marley to the
heights of international acclaim.

BEENIE MAN RECOVERING
Beenie is reportedly in stable condition at a private medical facility in
Kingston, after being transfered there from the Spanish Town Hospital
following his accident on the Mandela Highway early yesterday morning.
His manager, Patrick Roberts, told THE STAR yesterday that Beenie Man was
conscious but badly bruised and shaken up.
The entertainment fraternity was rocked early yesterday morning when news
broke that Beenie Man's Hummer 2 motor truck overturned along the Mandela
highway at minutes to 4 a.m. Hours after the crash, several entertainers
showed up at the Spanish Town Hospital to give their support for the popular
entertainer. (The Star)
