THE MEDITATIONS
February 6, 2001
Star Hill Music Hall
Charlottesville, VA

The eve of Bob Marley's Earthday brought brisk February winds, and a nearly full moon to the doorstep of the central Virginia's newest rhythmic showcase...foundation-shaking bass and drum skank, and the soul-fired harmonies of the Meditations soaring above.

A near-capacity assembly of all ages and persuasions in attendance this Tuesday night were gifted with a masterful event, presented by some of the builders of Reggae's cornerstone of harmony and message. The intertwining of the smooth Impression-istic stylings of Ansel Cridland, Winston Watson and Danny Clarke, individually and collectively raised an upful atmosphere, all the while powered by primordial One Drop from the rhythm section... the flavor of jazz occasionally surfacing through the strings and keys. All feet, hearts and minds in motion, on stage and dancefloor. The massive collection of melodies (inspired by their Rock Steady origins) revolved around early smash hits "Woman Is Like A Shadow," and "Turn Me Loose," roots testimony "Running From Jamaica," and their continuing relevance and artistry on selections from their latest release on Easy Star Records, Ghetto Knowledge. As an appropriate remembrance on this day of the rise of Robert Nesta Marley (who's star was christened that day on Hollywood's Walk Of Fame), the Meditations shared, in words and song, the fruits of their labours with the Wailers, including "Blackman Redemption"... the conclusion blessed with a soulful, spontaneous reading of the Mayfield/Marley medley, "One Love, One Heart."

Give Thanks for the decades-long association of the voices of the trio, not to be missed when they approach your area. Massive RASpect, also, to Lem and the Easy Star crew for their recognition and presentation of true talent, soon to be followed on March 7 with the arrival of Sugar Minott, also at Starr Hill Music Hall.
